How Can Soft Furnishings Elevate Your Living Room?

When you think about the interior design of your living room, it can be easy to focus on the bigger elements of a transformation like the colour of the paint you use, the wallpaper you select and the key pieces of furniture in the space. While your sofa, coffee table and bookcases are all important, there is an often overlooked star in living room interior design.

That overlooked element is your soft furnishings. These are the likes of cushions, curtains and throws. While they are often seen as add-ons, a great interior designer knows that it’s these touches that make the design of a room go from good to great.

The likes of cushions and throws can add some much-needed additional texture to your space. They can also be a great way to introduce different patterns or colours to your living room.

In fact, soft furnishings are one of the best ways to change the look and feel of a room without having to spend thousands on a complete redesign. You can swap out the cushions on your couch to inject the patterns or colours that are on trend this season.

For example, earlier this year Vogue highlighted jewel tones as one of the top interior trends to watch. If you have a neutral living room, you could bring it in line with this aesthetic with some carefully selected throws and cushions.

Given that the fashion magazine also suggested that all-white interiors are out of favour, this is a great way to update a room that is more neutral with a few pops of colour. Another interior design trend that soft furnishings are perfect for embracing is the return of velvet as a fabric.

Again, a selection of velvet cushions for your sofa and chairs will look sumptuous and beautiful. Plus this is a great fabric to go for if you also want to embrace some of the deeper jewel tones – think emerald green or deep blue.
